That was great, from start to finish! (Well, again I closed my eyes when it came to the torture scenes... :-O)
It's not only a case story where Doyle sleeps with the female character. (And I wouldn't call it 'het'. 'Het' implicates for me a longer relationship, including all-days problems and routine – that's far from it.) I think it's a very clever character study of the three protagonists, without ever losing the focus on the close relationship between Bodie and Doyle. But also without being repetitive or boring.
Magpie is a professional killer. She is also the God-daughter of Cowley. Bodie is behaviour shows a mixture of understanding, even admiration and protective instinct. He likes Maggie and they've found a teasing basis. Doyle hates the (cop) killer Magpie but he is somehow fascinated and learns to accept her – and the reasons why she had chosen that way...
What I like best is the perfect and teasing banter between Bodie and Doyle, but also between them and Maggie. :-)
"Bodie affected shock. It was easy to play off her, he knew. Verbal sparring to hide real concern, and silly words of mock love where friendly affection had begun. It was like playing with a kid sister. Flirting without danger. "Don't tell Ray," he whispered. "He'd be heartbroken." "Want you all to himself, does he?" "Well, can you blame him?"
(That was the slashers-teaser... :-P)
BTW – I think Cowley is spot-on too. Ruthless and politically incorrect, but never mean – just the way we like him! :-) I caught my breath when he gave his God-daughter a gun, so that she 'won't be alive', when he hands her over to her enemies... "“They never stipulated that you be alive for the trade,” he said, his voice soft and silken." *gulps*

Yes, a thrilling story! Thank you!
