I hate the Elmore Leonard list, I really do. Particularly rules 3 and 4 ("Never use a verb other than "said" to carry dialogue" and "Never use an adverb to modify the verb 'said'"). I like the interesting verbs, and there are times when an adverb makes all the difference.
