Weekly Check-In Post

How is everyone doing this week? Writing coming along well? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments!

For those of you who like to procrastinate by reading other people's writing tips and who could use a few more words on that Big Bang draft, I recommend How I Went From Writing 2,000 Words a Day to 10,000 Words a Day.

For those of you with a lot of spare time, there's the Absolute Write thread Learn Writing With Uncle Jim. It's geared more towards the professional-novelist side of things, but it's still good advice.

Hope you're having fun!

Having fun? No.

A bit uncertain about stuff and thinking of contacting cheerleader(s) if available for some other perspective.

No, not time yet to use ths icon. Just practicing for now.

Well, it's defintely going better than it was; I'm currently just over the rough draft limit. But it's all pretty much junk. And I've always known it'll take more than 15,000 words to tell this story. :/

I was outlining last night (and fell asleep, so here I am now), and I can see where the holes are. And they're a *little* bit (a LOT) bigger than, "." The story itself is noticeably lacking, development-wise (they go from point A to point M several times). And Doyle isn't, well, Doyle; and Bodie's behavior is explained better in my head than on the page. D:

Although there's one scene that did exactly what I wanted it to... :D
*One* scene. D:

The biggest challenge coming up, though, is in revising. The first half of the story was burned onto a DVD amid the dying cries of my video card. And there's the rub - I have no way of reading a DVD right now (am using a netbook for personal stuff), and I still have a verklompt foot. The first 4-5,000 words are on paper (with lots of markups).

I'm trying to get someone to get me over to the library so I can take the seven minutes to mail the file to myself. Unfortunately, that won't happen before Friday. So I feel a disruption in the force because I can't get into editing it properly, much less sending it off for discussion. :(

Well, I *could* retype it in if I have to. That's a form of revising. ;_;

Tentatively waves hand above parapet: yes, I’m having fun – this week. I can’t believe the high I am on after three great days where I can’t stop writing and everything has been flowing perfectly. Well, not quite everything. Chapter 5 still has a big fat 0 word count, but at least I’m not worrying about it anymore.

I’ve a question though: are these mood swings normal - one minute depression, the next euphoria (and no, it’s not hormonal this time)? :)

Following my mini meltdown I just want to thank sc_fossil and saintvic for their encouragement and support in last week’s check-in post.

Now, where did I leave off last night? What’s that? I can hear my husband muttering about something called housework, but I don’t know what that is. Surely it can’t be as important as the Pros Big Bang? I'll just shut the door on him. Okay, so Doyle and Bodie were …

I'll be your cheerleader any time mate! xx

[identity profile] inlovewithboth.livejournal.com 2012-05-22 07:19 am (UTC)(link)
you sound like you're at a very similar stage to me, and it's a stage I quite like. And I can't wait to read your 'one scene', it sounds great already!

[identity profile] inlovewithboth.livejournal.com 2012-05-22 07:19 am (UTC)(link)
I love that feeling you get when the writing flows. Housework? I'm with you mate! xx

How'm I doing? Not so well. :( On the other hand, I found the link on how to increase your daily word count very enlightening. I now have a plan on how to make this bloody story behave!

(I do have yet another story that I've been writing on for ages that is almost at the minimum word count with a very clear idea of how to finish it (I've just been lazy) as a backup, should I need it - so I'll have something to submit on time)

I seriously reckon I should have just given in and written Bodie and Doyle in a fantasy setting like the damn muse wanted. *sigh* Doyle would look good with pointy ears, wouldn't he? *g*

[identity profile] liriel1810.livejournal.com 2012-05-22 07:52 am (UTC)(link)
*hugs* Writing is a shit of a thing... but even when it's making us miserable, it's still something we really want to do, eh?

I'm sure you'll get your story to behave in plenty of time. *hugs again*

[identity profile] liriel1810.livejournal.com 2012-05-22 07:53 am (UTC)(link)
Yay for one scene that behaved the way you wanted it to! I'm sure the rest of it will get beaten into submission in time too.

[identity profile] liriel1810.livejournal.com 2012-05-22 07:56 am (UTC)(link)
Yay! So glad to hear you're over the worry of the last check-in. It sounds like you're going great guns.

I can't speak for everyone else, but my mood about any story I work on fluctuates like you wouldn't believe - usually depending on how well the writing is going. *g* I quite often will swear that I'm shite at writing and I'm going to give it up... and then I'll turn around and pound out 6,000 words in a day and be brimming with enthusiasm. *g*

Housework will always be there when you're done with the lads. ;)

[identity profile] solosundance.livejournal.com 2012-05-22 10:05 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, two possible Big Bangs and enough time for all the polishing bits. That's brilliant (and in no way lazy)!

[identity profile] solosundance.livejournal.com 2012-05-22 10:06 am (UTC)(link)
Hooray for great writing days! Boo for housework! Sounds like things are basically going pretty well, and yes, I think the up and down feeling is totally normal :D

[identity profile] solosundance.livejournal.com 2012-05-22 10:10 am (UTC)(link)
Although there's one scene that did exactly what I wanted it to... :D

Well-behaved scenes are of the happy. Hope your foot is getting better (and I'm sure what you have so far - rough draft limit yay! - is far from junk).

[identity profile] liriel1810.livejournal.com 2012-05-22 10:12 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I probably won't finish the standby if I can get this second idea I had to work out. (the first idea is absolutely refusing to cooperate) *g* I don't think you can post two stories for a big bang, can you?

[identity profile] solosundance.livejournal.com 2012-05-22 10:14 am (UTC)(link)
Getting a fresh pair of eyes can often be really helpful when you're not feeling so good about a story or your progress on it. I'm sure there are lots of people here who'd be happy to do that at any stage (me included!)

[identity profile] solosundance.livejournal.com 2012-05-22 10:18 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think you can post two stories for a big bang, can you? I'm guessing not unless you've signed up for two - but at least you have the work behind you so defaulting is much less a possibility. And isn't it strange and maddening how sometimes first ideas, or what you originally planned, just... stop cooperating... Gah!

[identity profile] liriel1810.livejournal.com 2012-05-22 10:22 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's sort of what I figured. But hey, the standby will get finished one day if I don't need it for this year... maybe for next year. *g* I really, really didn't want to have to bow out.

It's so frustrating to get an idea... and then be totally unable to complete the damn story. I'm determined to get all three stories done... sometime in the next decade. *g*

[identity profile] sc-fossil.livejournal.com 2012-05-22 10:36 am (UTC)(link)
It's one to a customer! LOL! We love the enthusiasm of two stories but with the time constraints and the need for an artist for each writer, one per person works best.

[identity profile] liriel1810.livejournal.com 2012-05-22 10:53 am (UTC)(link)
*g* I wasn't even half seriously contemplating posting two stories, so don't worry about that! I'll be ecstatic if I can get ONE story completed on time!

[identity profile] solosundance.livejournal.com 2012-05-22 11:02 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pleased to have 1,000 words down now and had a total blast with those. My so-called "outline" for the story is severely plot-lite, which I know is not a good omen at this stage, but I'm hoping somehow *something* will happen as we go along...

[identity profile] liriel1810.livejournal.com 2012-05-22 11:42 am (UTC)(link)
One thousand words is good! I'll keep my fingers crossed that 'something' happens to beef up your plot as you go along.

[identity profile] golden-bastet.livejournal.com 2012-05-22 02:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that Big Bangdom can turn the best writer into fodder for a psych dissertation, LOL.

But yeah: when the writing's coming, and the endomorphins are flowing, that's a very good feeling. :sighs happily:

Housework? What is this thing of which you speak? Please to spell that for us. :D

You write 6,000 words in a day? :touches your icon reverently:

Actually, I think you're doing awesome. It's just sorting through what you currently want to express, and you'll figure that out.

And better yet - we have multiple stories to look forward to from you! :D

Doyle would look good with pointy ears, wouldn't he? *g*
No - *not* the elf. STEP AWAY FRM THE ELF.

Noooooo! Don't go the way of the elf!

I'm sure you're doing fabulously - look, I'm even waving the pompoms! *\o/* Go you!
