So, BBers - it's check-in time, once again!

A hearty welcome to the artists / vidders who have signed up so far! If that sentence leaves you wondering, "have I been sheltering-in-place too long? I don't know what she's talking about," then check out the artists / vidders sign-up post; it'll give the official bits on how to do what you might for the lads art-wise. If you yearn to capture the broad expanse of Bodie's chest, or the cheeky curve of Doyle's - well, cheek (your choice which one), then here's your opportunity and a willing audience.

And if you have any questions, come find your friendly neighborhood modsTM. That's what we're here for!

More in general, to writers and artists/vidders alike: how is it going? Are the Bisto Kids seeing eye-to-eye yet? Or is Cowley about to suspend them both so he can pull an Operation Susie on them? (Or is the blank screen of your computer, and the seven earlier tries, mocking you? I raise my hand here.) Come share, and tank up on petrol in the Capri so you can take it out for a(nother) spin.

:-)

I've always wanted to sign up to do a bit of artwork, but I struggled to get the word count off the ground this year and arting also includes reading, so you have to factor in time for that too. I'm still thinking about that.

As for writing, my new 'swiss cheese' approach - apart from putting me in the mood for emmental - is proving quite successful. Did a quick word count last night and I'm now at around 6k - so that gets me past the rough draft hurdle.

I'm discovering issues I don't normally encounter, such as continuity - that's harder to keep a grip on if you're writing out of order. And word count - can't just count everything in one go because some of it is only chapter plans. And it's harder to have a grasp of the shape of the story - even with chapter plans - in my head, because I normally only check in at a few strategic waypoints when I'm writing and meander all over the shop in between. Which probably says more about my head than anything else.

On the upside, the story revolves around the impact of certain 'events' - so I have written the events first, so all the other chapters can hang off them (that would be something I would normally just have in my head). I'm not - so far - finding I'm doing any more revision than usual, which was something I wondered about. And I figure the continuity thing will work itself out when I read the story through as a whole after I've written it.

I did find one of my chapters morphed into two - but that happens when I write my normal way. So that's no bother.

So, so far so good.

I am a regular 'swiss-cheese' style writer, and yeah, it usually involves a bit of editing for continuity when you stitch the various scenes together.
I'm liking the idea of writing the key events first, and then the various reaction or connecting scenes. I think I do that instinctively most of the time.
Happy writing!

It's been quite interesting using a new (to me) writing technique.

I'll probably default to my linear style for other stories, but it's nice to have tried something new and found it works, because I can definitely see me using this again if I get stalled on anything else.

Yesterday I worked out an important plot point - so it's all progress.

I've got to get this out of my head and into words/sentences/paragraphs. I've abandoned the laptop this week and moved to notebook and pen, and I've actually accomplished a bit. Not enough yet, though.

Perhaps if I concentrate on writing the principal events over the next couple of weeks, I might have a bit more success at both getting my story solidly in hand (er, that's a nice visual... *big grin*) and also boosting up my word count, which is in need of a good deal of help.

Notebook and pen are invaluable - and there's software that lets you scan it in and convert it to typed text (might need two different apps). Lots of it is free.

Before I went with 'swiss cheese' I did think about trying one of those voice-to-text apps (or as we used to call it back in the day: 'dictation'). That would work with reading handwritten manuscripts too.

I hope writing the principle events works as well for you as it did for me 😊

Fortunately for all writers, there's more than one way to get to wherever the writer envisions the story going.

I once wrote (in another fandom) the big climactic scene at the end of the story first... and had no idea how the two characters would end up having this conversation. I had to work back and come up with a story that would then result in the ending I'd already written.

So whatever is getting your creative mojo working is the best way for you to write this particular story. Yay! Go Team!
