Genre: Slash
Characters/Pairing: Bodie/Doyle

Summary:A month after being shot through the heart, Raymond Doyle disappeared from hospital. Bodie was told in no uncertain terms to leave things alone, but there was no way he wasn’t following him, even as the trail lead to shady arms deals, CIA entanglements, notoriously cruel entrepreneurs and the city of Venice, deceptively idyllic in a summer holiday that is about to take a dark turn. Only just beginning to understand how he feels about his partner, Bodie is determined to save Ray from whatever web he’s become entangled in, but he isn’t expecting Ray himself to resist his help, any more than he’s expecting the other secrets that reveal themselves in the City of Masks.
Notes: Chronologically, thank you to all the mods for putting on and running this Big Bang and generally keeping us on track, thank you
draycevixen for tempting me into signing up (Queen of Pimps!) and to her and
przed,
saintvic,
heliophile_oxon and
siskiou for tirelessly cheerleading whenever I slammed up another wordcount on my LJ ♥ Thank you
kayberrisford for sound-boarding and listening to my ramble, even in hotel rooms when just about to go to boyband concerts ♥ Thank you to my wonderful beta reader
elfwhistletree who read this several times AND wrangled a LoM Big Bang for me this summer and supplied rainbow socks ♥ And last but definitely not least, thank you to the amazing and generous
norfolkdumpling, who presented me with a beautiful piece of art that really motivated me to finish up, then proceeded to shower me with yet more gorgeous artwork - I could not be more delighted with the end product and it has been lovely to get to know you better ♥

Date: 2011-10-05 02:04 pm (UTC)I decided to have a quick peek at this, intending to read it leisurely at a more appropriate time but then I couldn't put it down.
I don't want to spoil it for others but do want to say how much I loved this ... and the artwork is fab. The snippets from the classic painting between the chapters so perfectly depict the context of the writing.
You're both brilliant.

Date: 2011-10-05 03:04 pm (UTC)Right now I'm feeling a bit resentful that my Kindle has all the goodies and I must "be good" and wait until the weekend to get started on my reading.

I'm really looking forward to it, petal. ♥

Date: 2011-10-05 04:21 pm (UTC)It feels almost slighting to post so *soon* after you have posted this, because it looks as though I have just skimmed hastily through a really long and carefully-constructed and paced piece of work that must have taken weeks to write. Like a lecturer handing an essay back the day after you handed it in, and it took all that time to do and you think "all that, and you read it for how long?"
But honestly, you have just destroyed my working day. I didn't skim. I just drank it all in, avidly. I happened to see it, opened the tab, glanced at the start, read a little bit... read a little bit more...
I loved everything from the dialogue to the plot, but I won't mention specifics until people have had a chance to read.
And the artwork: beautifully put together.

Date: 2011-10-05 09:07 pm (UTC)I just looked at your journal to read "Recovering" again, and *of course* I read "But Who's Counting" and "Different" first *g*.
You have such a talent to write sex scenes not in a technical way, but as a part of a story, a relationship, without ever being sappy. It's a sort of movie in my head with these stories, no details, just a floating atmosphere, a feeling of a second very deep and intense layer beyond the sex.
Uh, erm... I just wanted to tell you I am glad you wrote a BB story and I will read it.

Date: 2011-10-08 03:35 am (UTC)The plot was nicely paced and Doyle’s rationale when revealed was completely convincing.
All that wrapped up in some gorgeous prose. I have never been to Venice (although I have been to places that I have written about and I understand how inspiring it can be) but I’m thinking of adding it to the bucket list *g*.
Thank you – and thanks to ND as well, because her illustrations are superb!
Just one question, because I am clearly incapable of reading English – when Bodie misquotes Dickens and says ““We were all going to direct to heaven,” is that just because he’s tipsy or have I failed to pick up another meaning/intention?

Date: 2011-10-08 05:39 pm (UTC)I'm really pleased to hear that the plot engaged you and you found it convincing in the end, and of course also that loved the illustrations - I think they're gorgeous! *g*
Venice is a very weird place, some people hate it, but I do think it's worth visiting because there's no experience that I've found quite like ti *g*

Date: 2011-10-16 07:22 pm (UTC)What a fabulous, gorgeous story, thank you!
I loved it from start to finish. I've never been to Venice, but I could almost feel myself there, the light and the heat and the water... Bodie's dogged loyalty and love really rang true for me, and Doyle's motivations were totally believable. And you wrote them the way I love them best - feisty, tough, contrary, bickering blokey blokes. Perfect.
ND's beautiful artwork suits it perfectly too. Thank you both ♥

Date: 2011-10-20 04:57 am (UTC)I loved your sumptuous setting descriptions that provided the backdrop (and ND's equally sumptuous artwork)! Thanks for painting Venice from more than one perspective.
Thank you also for the depth you went into over the lads' underlying thoughts and motivations; this made all the twists and turns seem completely plausible.
