A question

Hello everyone!

There's something I'm trying to find out for my story - well, two things actually, and I wonder if anyone can help me.

1. In the '60s and '70s, what was the minimum term of service for a naval officer? How long would one sign up for, and how easy/hard was it to quit?

2. Did all private schools in the '50s have entrance exams? Or were there some where any kid could go if his parents had the money?

Help?

I have about a billion factoid questions, and the Google-Fu is a bit spotty right now, but I need to leave something for the betae, after all. These two, however, might be easily answered:
  1. Would a post-war birth certficate be marked England, Britain, or UK? I'm basically mentioning Bodie's, and LC's basic birth info should be sufficient (think that's what they did in the series).
  2. Would the Bishop of Fulham normally preside at a funeral? (General info on COE funeral rites would help, too.) Could a wealthy-enough family get/convince him to perform the rites?

Regarding the phrase 'throw your toys out of the pram'. Was it in use in the 70's/80's? Or am I going to have to come up with something else to use in that place? I've tried searching the Online Etymology Dictionary with no luck at all, and googling just gives me instances of how to use it. *rolls eyes* I know that.

Thanks for any and all help with this!

What bridge is Doyle standing on in Blackout (the conversation with Stuart)? And is it in an area where CI5 might locate an agent's flat?
Thanks!

I'm looking for a bit of advice on how to handle this - or maybe it'll turn out not to be a problem after all...

My story starts out with two events that happen prior to the "real" story. I've put each in its own chapter, with the year in the chapter's title. So Chapter 1 - 19XX, then Chapter 2 is 19xx + 3 years. Then I get to the actual story, that occurs 2 years after Chapter 2. (Have I lost you already? *g*) My question is how to make sure that the reader knows that from Chapter 3 on, we are in the present and that this is where the story takes place. (Oh, and there is a flashback in the main story, but it is clearly labeled and italicized, so it is clear that it is a flashback). Hmm - I'm confusing myself...

I thought of labeling the first two chapters as a prologue - but I wasn't sure about that -
Anyone have any advice?

On a fact-findinng mission...

Also, if there's some sort of protocol here about asking questions, please let me know.

Writing is happening! Oooh )

Doyle worked for the Met,Scotland Yard and CID - if I recall correctly (sometimes I get canon and fanon all mixed together!) - and he was an expert marksman. Would he have been allowed to carry a gun in any of his police roles? In the Drug squad? Undercover? My story has a apart that kind of depends on him being with some group of police that would be allowed to carry. Help?

Is it okay if the story contains in the mddle a short bit that was already posted online... that didn't count towards the minimum word count... if it was important for the story?

In an attempt to evade writing more words, I was casting around desperately for some more research to do.  So here's a question for you:  is Kate Ross a psychologist or a psychiatrist?  I had a quick look through all the usual sources but couldn't find a definitive answer.  We see a lot of her in fanon, but in canon, I think we only meet her in Wild Justice - correct?

Thank you!

One of our writers, [livejournal.com profile] marjorammax has asked a few questions about London in the 70s. I thought some of our great researchers and folks who lived it could point her in the right direction. Here's what she asked in her post to the comm earlier today:

Anyway, does anybody know much about London in the mid 70s? What parts were considered rough to be living in? And in what districts would there have been derelict warehouses (the Docklands maybe?)? Any and all help will be gratefully received.

There's probably something here we can all learn so chime in with your useful websites, personal knowledge and/or information, etc.

thanks!

I'm currently in planning for my big bang story and I have a couple of questions I need answers to, but don't know how to find these answers. I'm hoping the wonderful people here can help me. Even just a place to start looking would be appreciated. My google-fu is not so fabulous.

1. If Doyle's family background was on the 'shady' side (no one's ever been arrested, but a lot of their business has been somewhat questionable - just petty stuff, though) would he have been allowed to join the police? Doyle himself was never involved in any quasi-wrongdoing.

2. Does anyone know where the wealthy area of Liverpool is? I've been trying to find information on Liverpool but it's mostly just general stuff.

Just when I thought I had my story sorted, plot laid out and everything, I've had a change of heart. One Sunday Afternoon Tea with a good friend at Soho's Secret Tearoom and all of a sudden I've got a whole new plot scribbled out on my note pad! I was so sure before and now - am I doing the right thing? This new plot is very different to my first and I'm a bit concerned I might not be able to do it justice. Yeeks!!
