My valuable Britishness got me an early all-areas-access to this wonderful story. :-D I can't recommend it highly enough - dashing narrative, strong, sexy characterisation, and a breathtaking plot that will keep you on the edge of your cyberseats, pleading for resolution, right till the very end. I loved it, JGL, and it was my great pleasure to be your picky, hairsplitting English rose. Or the thorn in your side. Thank you for writing such a great, authentic Pros tale.

Beautifully written, your story stroke a chord with me. The proverb from which you chose the title could be considered the perfect summary. I'm glad I picked it for the artwork (not least because of the title) and I really enjoyed doing it. :-)

Wow, this is a beautiful story, I love the beautiful controlled writing, which kept me guessing to the end.

You are the maestro of suspense and intrigue.. Wow, I was sincerely biting my nails right till the very end.

Such a lyrical sweep to this, and crackin' good dialogue, too. Absolutely terrific. Thank you so much, this is just what my Sunday needed.*g*

Oh wow. It reminds me of that old hairspray advert - is he or isn't he? And blimey don't you keep us guessing! One minute you're convinced he is, next minute the wind change direction it suddenly isn't! Masterful. I love it. In fact, I'm going to have to read it all over again, so I can see just how clever it was.

You certainly made me have more than a couple of nail-biting, hair-pulling moments! I don't know what got me more: thinking Doyle was dead, knowing that Doyle was dead and that this impostor had taken his place, or knowing that Doyle wasn't dead and both bodie and Doyle were crazy. Good grief... It was a great tale. I couldn't stop reading! I threatened to thump you several times as I read, forging ahead, not reading the end first. You're darned lucky, ya know. *bg*

Excellent job. thank you!

Your story sucked me in and wouldn't let me go until I finished every last word. Like poor Bodie, my emotions were rocked from beginning to end and you so had me on the edge of my chair. The Robeau Kitties and I applaud you and your work. It was wonderful.

Yes, what a terrible roller coaster trip of emotions.
Thrilling and heartbreaking!

"Mostly. Sometimes it takes a while to figure out if a memory is the real thing or not,
but I'm gettin' better at it. I'm okay, Bodie. Really."
Bodie swallowed. "I'm not."

Oh dear... you got me with that...
*clears throat*

And the print looks absolutely 'noble' with cloudless' great art!
Thank you!

Holy Moly - what a terrific story! I was as confused as poor Bodie - is it Ray?, yes, no, maybe.... beautifully done. The characterizations were spot on, Ray's falling apart and Bodies angst were tangible.
(I love all your Pro's fiction, though there really isn't enough of it! You wrote in a review of another's story that you were changing your feelings about AU stories - here's a thought - how about Ray and Bodie meeting up with Adrien and Jake, maybe during Lisa's Christmas in London? *g*
Thanks for a most enjoyable story. I hope you'll consider writing some more Pro's fiction soon.

Ah, you bastard. Give me back my heart.

(and you haven't forgotten Collier and Siddeley! ... I liked that)

But I still want my heart back. And you're still a bastard for ripping it out so effortlessly. ::sniff:: ::blinks back tears::

A beautifully written story that keeps you on the edge all the way through. You really are a story telling master – keeping the reader intrigued right to the end. And the lads were so real, their own unique characteristics revealed subtly throughout the narrative. I especially liked Bodie’s growing awareness of his own shortcomings and failures then acceptance of what he really wanted.

Thanks for such a great read:)

Wow, what a brilliant story.
I had to read it in one go, what a rollercoaster ride indeed.
One minute you were sure, Ray is dead and then, what a relief!, you find out he lives and in a tick you turned the table upside down again and not only once.
You know, how to play with your readers nerves *g*
I actually was glued to my reader, lol.

Thank you so much for writing this! :D

and I second the idea of an AU with B/D and Adrian and Jake *g*

I read your story on tenterhooks to the last page and then downloaded it to my Kindle because I wanted to read it again. Immediately. Just to savour those tensions and skilful storytelling.
But you know what? I just had to print it out, too (Adorned by the beautiful artwork, too of course - well done, cloudless!) which is not something I do often these days but I just know this one is a keeper.
Very absorbing and very much our lads and what are you going to do with all these hearts you've stolen, eh?
Oh and more please!

Am only just now finally getting to have time to read all the stories and can I just say, as of the first four words of your summary, YOU'RE EVOL JOSH! I don't read when one of 'my boys' is killed... except you wrote it, and now I have to.

But I have faith that you're not going to break my heart, cause I'll... *ponders* Well, I'll be quite cranky with you. Does that work? Kind of feeble as a threat, I know.

*checks word count and then ponders if there's enough time to read it tonight* Might have to come back to this after work tomorrow... but I had to tell you that you're evil! ;P

A really amazing story. I was kept in doubt about Doyle along with Bodie and the suspense was killing me! I couldn't stop reading until I got to the end and knew. And what an ending, together at last.

Gripping plot wonderfully told. Almost reminded me of HRs stories in it's vulnerable parts. Love the dialogue Firle pointed out above. Great moments. And the small things you suddenly detect- more greyish hair (Doyle's grey temples are so damn sexy!!!), wrinkles, hidden by the look of love until then. So true.
Although Bodie slept with an imposter, he didn't recognize it's not him- disappointing or it's a super twin imposter! :D
Just a detail: The moment when Bodie got the information that Doyle would disappear, out of CI5, there I would have expected more emotional reaction from Bodie. He's been patient, he waits, did what he was told, and Doyle would just disappear without telling him a word. My stomach would churn, and I would fume a moment later after all he's endured.
Thank you very much for taking part!

I just wanted to say how much I loved your story which I read a while back and thought I'd commented on but I've just realised I only did so in my head, so I must apologise for that.

I didn't want to read any of the description at the beginning so this bit: you're not Doyle came to me as a complete surprise and I loved the fairly rare experience of having no idea what was going on or what was about to happen and so, like everyone else, I spent the rest of the story biting my already chewed-down nails, guessing, wondering how Bodie could *not* know his Doyle and generally being totally absorbed by a damn good story with dialogue and characterisations to match. Every now and again I come across stories (and there have been a few in this challenge) which reinvigorate my love for Pros and this is one of them which I know I shall read again. Thanks so much for writing it.

That was truly gripping! I was amazed at the way you took me so far into Bodie's head that my ideas of whether or not Doyle was an imposter changed with Bodie's opinions and were not affected by anything else like clues within the story or in the 'warnings/blurb/etc'.

Yet at the same time I was trying to reconcile my pleasure in the story and my interest in the writing techniques... Needless to say,he story won!!

The scene in the carpark was really good - the way the outside world faded and they were locked in their conversation; Doyle's trigger-happy state simply kept everything else at bay. I liked the way you differentiated between hypnosis and brainwashing without drowning us in psychology. And I loved the sex - absolute need for each other regardless of who either of them thought Ray might be.

Finally got some time to start reading.

Ohmigod, what a wild ride! Devastating heartbreak, unreasonable hope, suspicion, hope, deeper suspicion, disbelief, fear, heartbreak, and finally supreme happiness and a dazzling hope for their future.

Doyle was just enough different to keep Bodie's suspicions aroused. One has to wonder if subconsciously he was doing that on purpose, knowing in his heart that he needed help and that Bodie, his partner, the other half of him, was the only one capable of freeing him from the living nightmare.

Brilliant story, as always!

This was a brilliant idea and you conveyed it into a sound plot. I very nearly missed it, as I don't read death fics, but I had a feeling it wasn't, so started and luckily Doyle came back just in time.

The whole idea of is it Doyle or isn't it Doyle was masterly done and I changed my mind as much as Bodie did.

Well done, I enjoyed nutting it out with Bodie.

I know I'm damnably late, but just wanted to let you know how impressed I was with your story. Actually I still haven't read them all yet - slight case of being distracted by cowboys, you know how it is *g* But wow! I'm always in awe of writers who can deliver a suspenseful, twisty tale and do it without losing the pacing. The mark of an accomplished storyteller :D Excellent plotline and I particularly liked your Bodie. So controlled but a mess of emotions underneath. Thanks for a great read!
